Burgmuller – Barcarolle (Op.100 No.22) -in bits

Another of my ‘in bits’ videos – this one is Burgmuller’s Barcarolle (Op.100, No.22).  A beautiful piece which requires a great deal of focus on the cantabile quality in the right hand balanced against a delicate left hand accompaniment.

    Okay then, this is totally unconnected but I’ve been pondering over this one for a week or so and the more I ponder over it, the more convinced I am. Unfortunately just after the summer holidays our car tax, MOT and insurance was due at the same time meaning the money I had put by for piano lessons had to go on these expenses – and so once again I had to stop seeing my piano teacher. I still practiced up until this week when I realised ‘what’s the point, I’ve nothing to aim at because I cannot play to my teacher’ and so I’ve left my piano alone for a few days, sick and tired of going over the same old, same old my now-ex teacher had given me in July.
    But that is not the point. You are probably aware of the old stereotype of serious music being for ‘posh’ people (I was told I was ‘posh’ a few weeks ago for liking Rachmaninov) but I am in social group E. I was in fact the only person my ex-teacher had on her books in social group E. So, the question I have been pondering is this, whereas barriers of race and religion are now thankfully coming down for people studying music and learning the piano, those of social class still remain because this is underpinned by financial status and income. And can lower class/underclass/low income people such as myself even with all the enthusiasm in all the world study an instrument, or is the system that keeps us firmly in our place in the world always going to be against us, thus keeping real music firmly in the realms of the A B and C1 groups? It would be interesting to hear your views on this – maybe you’ve had experiences of good and musically competent pupils who had to regretfully give up because they simply could not afford to carry on?
